PRIX DE L'ARC DE TRIOMPHE 2005 REPORT

What a spectacle!  Longchamp has never seen so many people attend this unique and well organised world championship event. Although, the official figure is just over 57 000 racegoers , we estimate the numbers to be well over 60 000 when you add up all the free entrances .

Although the weather, this year, wasn't perfect and despite the little down pour during the big race, it did not deter the punters and especially  the ladies taking part in the best hats competition organized by the magazine ' Madame Figaro' and the 'Arc' sponsors ' Lucien Barriere' ( see below some of the best captions).

Now, back to racing; there were eight races on the card and six of them were Group 1 races.  The Prix de l' Arc de Triomphe being the last of the Group one races, the punters,  the showmen and showwomen all had time to impress!

The results:

• The first Group 1  race , the Prix du Cadran, was won by Reefscape (C. Soumillon). Second place went to Otankino (O.Peslier).
• The second Group 1 race , Prix de l' Abbey, was won by Avonbridge (S. Browne). Second place went to Striking Ambition (T. Thulliez).
• The third Group 1 race , Prix de l' Opera, was won by Kinnaird (K. Darley).  Mona Lisa (K.Fallon) came second
• The 4th Group 1 race , Prix Marcel Boussac, was won by Rumplestiltskin (K. Fallon). Quiet Royal (O. Peslier) came second
• The 5th Group 1 race , Prix Jean Luc Lagardere, was won by Oratio Nelson (K. Fallon). Opera Cape (J. Egan) came second.
• And now the ultimate race. Favorite Hurricaine Run (son of the great Montjeu), was the one to beat! . Although, the other contenders, Cherry Mix, Shawanda , Shirocco  and especially Westerner ran well , Hurricaine Run 's acceleration in the last 2 furlongs was just out of this world! Hurricaine Run won the Prix de l' Arc de Triomphe 2005 with ease! . And what  a  superb race! ..Already looking forward to next year's event!
